Cariboo History
Tales of pioneers of the Cariboo
Sherry Stewart left her comfortable life as a writer in Chicago to the Cariboo wilderness with her husband, 3 children, and goats and sheep in 1969. She began writing for the Cariboo Calling newspaper that same year, chronicling their adventures adjusting to life without running water or electricity as they established their homestead on Roe Lake. Over several decades her stories also chronicled the early Cariboo pioneers, drawing directly from interviews and with their family. Sherry is pictured in a prominent 100 Mile mural by Dwayne Davis, interviewing 'Grandpa' Ed Higgins in 1972.
